Although the story is simple, it is still engaging, and the acting is excellent, particularly from the villains. The music, composed by Zden?k Liška, is also evocative and complements the scenes well. While The Devil's Trap may not be a masterpiece, it is a strong effort that captures a glorious historical setting, making it an excellent starter before watching Vlá?il's more challenging films, Marketa Lazarová and The Valley of the Bees. Surprisingly, this gem remains largely overlooked and ignored.

It also sheds light on ancient customs in Russia, which Dame Marfa and her fellow countrymen fight against while trying to improve their lot. The film covers various aspects of agriculture, including harvesting, fatten cows or pigs. Despite the censorship and mutilation of the film during Eisenstein's final era, it was fortunately restored and shown by the German-French TV channel \"ARTE,\" with a music score by Herr Taras Bujewski that perfectly complements Herr Eisenstein's primal artistic interests.
