For once, there is some color in this story, which adds to the effect of seeing the warning signs, including the visible footage of Warsaw from above. The story centers around Jozef Malesa, who holds the occupation of a bricklayer, hence the title. Jozef was once a favorite in the party, being the son of two committed party activists, and he himself was a highly esteemed worker, with an unwavering dedication to The Movement. The party leaders recognized his potential and gave him a comprehensive education and high-ranking positions. However, Jozef ultimately decides to ask for a demotion to a simple bricklayer due to the ethical pressures posed by the obstructive bureaucracy above him. He is troubled by the party's lack of direct interaction with people and believes that workers often possess better knowledge than the leaders, despite the unequal power dynamics. Jozef feels uneasy about compromising his ideals and remains devoted to social justice. He joins his friends at the May Day rally where he finds comfort and confidence in his place in society, standing up against those in power who abuse it. His actual passion lies in bricklaying, which he finds engaging and fulfilling, which explains his exceptional skills in the trade from the outset.
