Novelist Joseph Shearing wrote stories based on real cases from Victorian England, which he then altered for fictional purposes. A number of Shearing's books were made into films, including MOSS ROSE in 1947 and two others in 1948: THIS FILM and THE MARK OF CAIN. THIS FILM follows a recently widowed missionary named Todd who falls for the charming yet dangerous Milland on a ship headed to England. When they arrive, Todd takes in boarders to make a living, including Milland, who uses letters to blackmail her friend. Todd goes along with the scheme, but it all goes wrong when Huntley, Fitzgerald's wealthy husband, catches on. Todd poisons Huntley to protect Milland and lets Fitzgerald take the blame. However, when one of Milland's ex-lovers shows up, Todd kills him in a jealous rage and turns herself in to the police. The film is well-acted, although it has a tendency to be talky at times. Milland plays the cad perfectly, a role in which he excels, and director Allen does a great job of bringing Shearing's story to life on the screen. 展开全部
